A laboratory information management system (LIMS) is an element of laboratory informatics that involves a system of hardware and software tools used in laboratories for the management of operational information.
History
Components
A LIMS must consist of the following components, either as one stand alone system, or as an integrated group of systems:
- Analyst personnel records/training system
 - Business process/workflow management
 - Client relations management
 - Data analysis/manipulation
 - Electronic laboratory notebook
 - Instrument control and data management (e.g., chromatography data management system)
 - Sample tracking
 - Scientific data management system
 - Test method/Procedure Management
 - Test result tracking
 - Standards management (reference standard, working standard, and other)
 - Workload and resource management
